Decimal to Octal

Decimal to Octal

To convert decimal to octal, it is important to understand both of these number systems. A decimal number is based on a base 10 system whereas an octal number is based on a base 8 system. For example, the decimal number (236.89)10 is comprised of an integer part (236) and a decimal part (.89); and the octal number (212)8 would contain digits ranging from 0-7. In order to convert a decimal number to its equivalent octal number, we need to divide it by 8 and write down the remainders in reverse. This is similar to other conversions, such as decimal to binary which is divided by 2, and decimal to hexadecimal which is divided by 16. Understanding the concept of base, remainders and reverse order calculation helps in converting decimal to octal rapidly and accurately.
